THOMAS ALDRED

Thomas was born in 1884 in Flixton.
His parents were Thomas, born in 1847 in Flixton,he was a bricklayer. and Elizabeth Owen, born 1846 in Oulton, Yorkshire, she worked as a laundress.Thomas and Elizabeth both died in 1908.They are buried in St Michael’s Churchyard, Flixton.

In 1901 Thomas was living with his parents at 25 Moorside Road.
In 1911 Thomas is living with his brothers George and Hartley at 25 Moorside Road, he is a Lithographic Artist.
Thomas married Emma Johnson in 1914 they had 2 children, Betty born in 1915 and Margaret born in Decemeber 1916. Thomas had been 'called up' but was allowed to stay for their baby's birth. He went to war in Febraury 1917 and this photograph is possibly the one he took with him. They were to never see him again.
Emma was a shopkeeper in Princess Road Urmston prior to moving to Canterbury Road where she died in 1946. She is buried in Urmston Cemetery.
Thomas joined the Leicestershire Regiment, service number 34270 and the 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, service number 41503.He enlisted in Bradford.
Thomas was killed in action on 31st July 1917 at Westhoek, near Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial in Ypres.
He was awarded the Victory and British medals.
He is remembered on his parents’ headstone and by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
On 31st July 2017 Thomas's family made a very special visit to The Menin Gate Memorial and TyneCot Cememtry. 3 generations were together for this very special memorial visit;- Christine (Granddaughter) Alison (Great Grand-daughter) and Emma his Great Great Grand-daughter.
