Sydney Lloyd Bowers was born on 26th October 1897 in Davyhulme. He was baptised at St Mary’s Church by Thomas Dugdale Harland and attended St Mary’s school. His parents were Joseph born on the 25th December 1857 in Manchester, a successful tobacconist and businessman and Elizabeth Jones born on 8th July 1854 in Stockport. Joseph who was registered deaf in the 1901 census died in 1901 and Elizabeth in 1932. They are buried in the family grave in Southern Cemetery.

In 1901 and 1911 Sydney was living at 60 Davyhulme Road.
He enlisted in Manchester into the 1/8th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment service number 252033.
He was Killed in Action on August 29th 1918 during the Somme conflict at Reincourt-les-Bapaume,France. He is buried in the Department-du-Pas-de Calais, Nord-Pas-de Calais.
He was awarded the Victory and British medal.
He is remembered on his family’s gravestone and by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
