William Royle Shawcross

WILLIAM ROYLE SHAWCROSS
18th October 1897 – 14th April 1917

William Royle  was born on the 18th October 1897 in Urmston, he was baptised at St Clement’s  Church in 1897.

His parents were William born in 1871 in Urmston, who was a Manager at a Cotton Mill and a Lampwick Manager and Grace Doddemeade born in 1871 in Derbyshire.

William died in 1931 and Grace in 1926.

They are both buried in Urmston Cemetery.

William had one sibling Harry Doddemeade 1895 – 1947.

In 1901 William was living at 22 Cross Street Urmston, he had moved to Acresfield, Moorside  Road by 1911.

He  enlisted in Manchester, he  joined the RFA service number 161691 and then the  8th Battalion  The Yorkshire Regiment, service  number 41992.

William was Killed in Action on the 14th April 1917 in France and Flanders.

He is buried in Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium.

He was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British and Victory medals.

He is remembered on the Family headstone and at Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm)
